The American Diabetes Association (ADA) invited the Herz- und Diabeteszentrum NRW (HDZ NRW) Bad Oeynhausen to present its care concept at the annual ADA conference in San Francisco at the end of 2019. "From metabolic to hemodynamic failure" was the name of the YouTube clip in which the responsible Clinic Directors at the HDZ NRW explained just how important well functioning cooperation between the relevant specialists from different disciplines can be for patient prognoses. The film illustrated this using the example of a female patient with diabetes mellitus, coronary artery disease and cardiac insufficiency.
The care concept at the HDZ NRW is exemplary, reflected in the rankings of top hospitals presented every year in Germany as the Focus List of best German hospitals and internationally as the Newsweek List of best hospitals worldwide. The Diabetes Center in Bad Oeynhausen was ranked 14th (for endocrinology) on the latest international list, while the HDZ NRW was ranked 19th (for cardiology) out of the 20 best hospitals worldwide.
Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Diethelm Tschöpe, Director of the Diabetes Center at the HDZ NRW, said of the rankings: "We see this as confirmation of our firm conviction that precision medicine means every single patient profiting individually from medical and therapeutic innovations according to his or her needs and with all the relevant disciplines becoming involved."
Prof. Dr. Volker Rudolph, Director of the Clinic for General and Interventional Cardiology and Angiology, added: "The care structures at the HDZ NRW already meet the requirements formulated by the American Heart Association (AHA) for the implementation of new treatments – especially those involving anti-diabetic substances – used preventively in the treatment of patients with heart and kidney diseases, in particular diabetic patients."
The Herz- und Diabeteszentrum NRW Bad Oeynhausen offers the entire range of available treatments for patients with cardiac and metabolic diseases, from prevention via intervention to surgical treatment of organs at the terminal stage, e.g. heart transplantation. This university hospital, a well established and now over 30-year-old pilot project of the Ruhr-University Bochum, has longstanding national and international cooperations with many other institutions and is deemed, not only in Germany but also worldwide, as exemplary in the manner in which it organizes and coordinates its various specialist clinics.
