Bad Oeynhausen,
Because the German labour market cannot provide enough nurses to cover the current demand in the healthcare sector, this year the Herz- und Diabeteszentrum NRW (HDZ NRW), Bad Oeynhausen, has for the first time employed 20 nurses from the Philippines. The first five new employees arrived in Bad Oeynhausen to a warm welcome this week. More nurses are expected in April.
The HDZ NRW made initial contacts last year via a German agency, a language school in the Philippines, and various video conferences, in combination with evaluation of submitted applications. The new employees are well qualified, and some already have experience of working abroad. Conditions for employment at the HDZ NRW include a German language certificate level B2 or higher, as well as official recognition of an equivalent level of nursing training.
1,600 nursing and off-ward staff are currently employed at the HDZ NRW under the management of Christian Siegling (Director of Nursing). They guarantee patient care for 500 hospital beds (around 100 of which are intensive care beds), nine cardiosurgical operating rooms, six cardiac catheter laboratories, and all areas in the Clinics of Cardiology, Pediatric Cardiology, Cardiosurgery, Pediatric Cardiosurgery/ Surgery of Congenital Heart Defects, and Diabetology. With state-of-the-art equipment and comprehensive concepts for initial and further training, the HDZ NRW is an attractive employer.
The specialist hospital has decided to employ qualified staff from abroad not least because important measures at home, such as the elimination of limited traineeship places in nursing, will take some time before their effect is palpable in hospitals. One important step is a first expansion of traineeship capacities from 1st August 2019. In addition, the HDZ NRW expects to be able in the future to increase its number of nursing trainees from the current 25, also to include pediatric nurses. As a specialist hospital, the HDZ NRW is always reliant in its training of nurses on cooperation partners. Corresponding agreements exist with Bünde Municipal Hospital and the Mühlenkreiskliniken Minden Academy for Healthcare Professions.
